CRADLEY preserved their stunning winning run in dramatic fashion as they snatched a last-gasp 47-43 win over King’s Lynn in the first leg of the Knockout Cup Final at Saddlebow Road.

The in-form Heathens put in a determined display in an exciting clash to snatch victory by the narrowest of margins following a spectacular late comeback on Wednesday night.

The visitors had trailed throughout the meeting and entered the final two races four points behind.

Yet they struck back to back 5-1s in the final two races, with teenage duo Max Clegg and Nathan Greaves performing heat 15 heroics to ensure they left Norfolk with one hand on the trophy.

In-form Clegg struck a stunning paid maximum to lead the side in the absence of injured No.1 Steve Worrall, whilst Greaves also battled through the pain barrier with his ankle problem to notch double figures.

Middle order man Tom Perry plus guesting No.1 Dan Halsey added solid scores in support to help cover a rare off night for skipper Paul Starke as he battled with mechanical issues.

Reserve duo Matt Williamson and Danny Phillips also made crucial contributions, with Phillips in particular holding his nerve in a tense penultimate race to strike a vital 5-1 alongside Perry.

It was a tremendous night for the Heathens to put them in a strong position ahead of next Tuesday’s second leg at Monmore Green – and team boss Will Pottinger was delighted with his side.

Said Pottinger: “It was quite remarkable because we were never ahead until after the final race, which I suppose is the best way to do it.

“It was a really good effort. A few of the lads had tough nights but Max Clegg was absolutely superb and Nathan Greaves really came to the party after a last place in his first ride.

“We are delighted with the win, and it keeps our winning run going which is absolutely brilliant.”
