MAX Clegg has been named as the new captain of Cradley Heathens.

Clegg, 17, is a full asset of the club and has won the league title twice in the two years he has raced for the Heathens.

The role completes a remarkable progression for the rider who has climbed his way from reserve to number one.

He joins fellow teenage racer Nathan Greaves in the top two along with new signings Mike Neale, Luke Harris and Ellis Perks, which leaves two team members remaining to complete the side.

“From the moment I first joined Cradley I’ve always wanted to be a number one for them, and now the opportunity has come I’ve definitely taken it with both hands,” he said.

“To be captain of the team as well is an honour because it’s such a great club, and I think it’s going to be another awesome year for us.

“We’ve had some great captains, Starkey and Ash have both been brilliant the last two years so hopefully I can learn from what they’ve done and do a good job as well.

“It’s a nice new challenge for us to have Birmingham as a home track and I think the National League is shaping up nicely for next season, there should be some cracking meetings.

“I like the way the team is coming together, we are a very young team and I’m sure the team spirit will be awesome.”
