GORNAL Athletic boss Andy Wyton says he will not be getting carried away after his side moved top of the West Midlands Premier.

The Peacocks are flying high after a 2-0 away win over fourth-placed Shawbury United last Saturday.

Goals from defender Steve Edmunds and forward Dreniz Bala secured another three points despite Athletic being under par on the day.

Wyton said: "We didn't play well but got the win. It's a good sign that we are winning when not performing to our best and it also highlights how good we could be with a little improvement.

"We had to show real Black Country grit to come out on top."

The manager also highlighted the contribution of goalkeeper Rich Kennedy after the stopper kept his 15th clean sheet of the season.

He said: "He has been brilliant and is a big part of how strong our defence has been. When you have the ability to keep clean sheets then it gives you and big chance to win even when you're not on top form."

Even though the victory lifted them to top spot, Wyton said his side were far from favourites to stay there.

"It is nice to be on top and the players deserve it after their hard work so far this season, but the teams below us have a lot of games in hand and should be able to reclaim it," he added.

Second-placed AFC Bridgnorth are two behind with two games in hand and third-placed Sporting Khalsa are six points adrift but boast a massive seven games in hand.

Gornal were set to go head-to-head with AFC Bridgnorth at home in the league cup last night.

They will then welcome neighbours Black Country Rangers to Garden Walk this Saturday.

Defender Alex Dallison is set to be unavailable after picking up a leg injury last week but could return within a fortnight.

His absence could be covered by left back Alex Cowley following his arrival from Causeway United.
