HALESOWEN Cycling Club's Friday night track league had its last round on September 2 with overall titles going to Charles Walker and Jack Hibberd in the senior leagues.

Ryan Brookes, Luke Harris and Luke Mannings secured titles in the youth and freewheeler categories.

Over 130 riders signed up for the 18-event league, which ran from May to September on the Manor Abbey Velodrome, and fields were healthy thanks in part to sponsorship from Wenlock Spring and Islabikes.

Walker and Hibberd were dominant throughout the season, with the first year senior Walker consistently ahead of his two closest challengers in the A category, juniors Nick Clayton from Halesowen and Luke Hardman of Bicicielo, whose battle for second place was not resolved until the final week.

Walker also took the A category sprinters' league over short distance events, again from Clayton and Hardman.

Seasoned track league rider Hibberd dominated the B-category racing through his strong sprinting, taking maximum points on most evenings he attended, although he was pressed hard in the longer events and was pipped in the sprinter's league by under-16 Harrison Bryan. On her debut at Halesowen this year, Leah Ball of Brotherton Cycles won a close battle for second place in the series from Bryan and veterans Tim Allen of Halesowen and Simon Tester of V-Sprint.

Ball also challenged strongly in the veterans and women's league, finishing second behind her Brotherton Cycles team mate Reece Lowe, while under-14 Brookes was dominant in the Youth One league, finishing well clear of Halesowen's Lorna Sharples after scoring close to maximum points on all the nights he attended.

The Youth 2 league for younger riders saw a close battle between Luke Harris and Thomas Porton, only swinging Harris's way in the final weeks, while the Freewheelers was a tight three-way fight between Luke Mannings, Leah Brookes, Ryan Oldfield and George Lewis, with only three points separating the four of them.

As the West Midlands road season draws to a close, the Halesowen Academy riders are in action on Sunday in the regional championships on the Bridgnorth circuit, where Walker, Tom Swingler, Jack Stanton-Warren and Patrick Fotheringham make a strong quartet in the senior event while Nick Clayton will be one of the favourites in the junior race.
