Wrockwardine Wood 5 - Lye Town 5

Lye Town Ladies were denied their second away win of the season by a last-minute controversial Wrockwardine equaliser.

With ninety minutes on the clock, Lye keeper Kelly Walker came to the edge of her box to collect an over-hit through ball, and with the ball in her hands and seemingly under control she was tackled by an on-rushing Wrockwardine forward who slotted home the loose ball as the Lye keeper lay motionless.

Players and supporters from both sides appeared astonished to see the referee allow the goal, who blew the final whistle immediately after the restart once Walker had received several minutes of treatment.

The Lyeonesses started the game positively, but were made to pay for missed chances as Wrockwardine lead 2-1 at the break, Lye’s reply coming from Clare Williamson.

Lye then took control of the second half and led the game 5-2 with ten minutes left with two further goals from Williamson, her second hat-trick of the season, and one each from Lauren Curwen and captain Katie Priest.

Lye would later rue missed chances from Williamson, Curwen, and Robyn Hingley who forced the keeper to impressively tip over from outside the box.

Wrockwardine pulled one back when a hopeful cross seemingly caught in the wind and dropped inside the far post, and set up the controversial finish scoring a fourth when Lye were looking to see out the game, with their pacey forwards posing a threat all game.

Lye will be looking to put this disappointment behind them when they play their first game back at Stourbridge Road on Sunday, against Sporting Kingshurst, kick off 2pm.
