LYE Town boss Martin Thomas praised the character of his team after they took the spoils with an injury time winner on Tuesday night.

The co-manager saw his side go 1-0 down to fellow Midlands League club Coventry United in an “extremely difficult” match, but they managed to pull back two goals to win the tight contest.

Thomas said: “We had nine players out through injury, suspension or other commitments but we showed what great character we have in the squad to come back and win from being 1-0 down.

“A Tuesday night away in Coventry is never going to be an easy task, let alone when you have nine players out, and these weren’t fringe players, these are lads who would have been involved, so to come away with three points was a brilliant result.”

That game followed an “easy” 1-0 home win against league newcomers St Andrews on Saturday which has seen the team go second in the table, but Thomas is not getting carried away.

He added: “Another six points and we’ll avoid relegation! Seriously though, we’re playing some cracking stuff at the moment and if we keep it up who knows what we can do.

“But you can’t win the league in October, wait until after Christmas and then we’ll have a better outlook on where we can finish.”

Town now face two home cup ties, the first on Saturday (3pm) against Highgate United in the Worcestershire Senior Cup, before inviting Championship side Burton Albion to the Stourbridge Road ground on Tuesday (7.45pm) for a Birmingham Senior Cup tie.

Thomas said: “The only disappointing thing about this season is our cup form. We’ve not had good cup runs so this week is our chance to put that right.

“Highgate is always a tough match up, but we will definitely see what we are made of when Burton come to visit next Tuesday.

“I know they won’t be playing their first team, but it will be good to put a performance in against a championship club and hopefully they will bring a few fans with them.”

An ever growing injury list means Kalum Evitts will not be back in the side until Christmas, while Town are also missing Matt Johnson (knee), Chris Knight (groin), Dan Jones (ankle) and Jack Pearlman (heel) while Alex Dallison is suspended.
