Wycombe 2, Stourbridge 1

BRAVE Stourbridge bowed out of the FA Cup with a narrow defeat at Wycombe Wanderers.

Powerful home forward Adebayo Akinfenwa broke Glassboys hearts late on when he headed in on 83 minutes.

Stour had fought hard to get back on level terms when Dan Scarr coolly slotted home on 69 minutes to cancel out substitute Sam Wood strike early in the second half.

But Stour more than matched their League Two opponents for large parts of the clash to the delight of the traveling army of visiting fans.

The Glassboys were far from intimidated by the occasion and were quick to get wide men Matt Dodd and Chris Lait into the clash as they soon went on the attack.

Adebayo Akinfenwa showed his threat after five minutes when he headed over at the far post but for the most part Jack Duggan dealt well with the threat.

Stour created a couple of chances of their own as Kayleden Brown and Luke Benbow forced keeper Jamal Blackman to gather good efforts on target.

Wycombe's best chance of the half fell to Scott Kashket on 20 minutes after he collected a loose ball in the area but fired wide of Matt Gould's near post.

However, Stour continued to work hard and created chances of their own, most notably when defender Dan Scarr, up from the back for a free kick, struck a sweet half volley that Blackman pushed away.

It was the Glassboys that ended the half on top and continued to push forward looking for the opener and would have been the happier going in at the break.

However, Stour couldn't maintain that momentum in the second half and found themselves behind just two minutes after the break.

The hosts were soon on the attack and substitute Sam Wood turned the ball in from close range after a host of wayward efforts weren't fully cleared.

It was harsh on the visitors after their fine first half but was just what Wanderers needed.

Suddenly Stour were finding it hard to retain possession and had to dig deep to keep themselves in the content as Gould again saved from Akinfenwa on 58 minutes.

But they did eventually claw their way back and forced a host of corners on the hour mark.

They continued to battle and were level on 69 minutes when a long free-kick into the box fell to the feet of Scarr who calmly rolled it beyond Blackman to send the packed away end delirious.

Stour then nearly had the lead on 79 minutes when Tonks' attempted cross from deep caught out Blackman but came back off the bar.

But it wasn't to be for the Glassboys and they found themselves trailing again on 83 minutes when Akinfenwa headed in a deep cross to the back post to break Stour hearts.

Again Stour pushed late on trying to secure a replay but couldn't work a clear opening in the closing stages.
