DESPITE not being able to win promotion this season, Lye Town’s boss said his team are still aiming for the league's top spot.

After suffering a post-Christmas blip in only their second defeat of the season at home to Brocton last week, Town were back to winning ways on Saturday with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Walsall Wood.

Although the Stourbridge Road side are battling for the Midlands League title, any prospect of going up is already out of the question after a decision was made by the club not to apply for promotion.

The team’s co-manager Martin Thomas said his players are still giving their all in spite of the promotion setback. Thomas said: “After the result against Brocton, if we hadn’t of got a win against Walsall Wood people might have accused us of throwing in the towel and that our season was over, but it’s not like that in the slightest.

“We will keep going and give our all to try to win this league and even though we can’t get promoted, we still want to win it to prove to everyone just how good we are.”

Goals from Jack Pearlman and Alex Dallison put victory against Walsall Wood beyond doubt for the December’s Midlands League team of the month, who also had a shot come back off the bar late into the second half.

Thomas added: “Walsall Wood gave us a really hard game. Like Brocton they should be higher up the league than they are.

“Their results are a bit like ours were last season, win one, lose one, and you just end up in the middle of the pack.

“They’re a very good side but we shaded it and deserved the victory. The good thing is that our midfielders and defenders are coming up with the goals, which takes a bit of pressure of the forwards.”

Lye head into Saturday’s home tie against Shepshed Dynamo missing Jack Pearlman (back), and Kalum Evitts (ankle), who Thomas said it still a “long way off” from coming back into the side.

“Shepshed are a big name club in our league and will bring a fair few supporters with them,” he said. “We drew 2-2 back at their place so we know it will be another tough test.

“Now we just have to wait to see if the game will actually go ahead as everybody’s been harping on about the weather this week and at the moment the odds are about 50/50.

“Unfortunately we’ve lost Chris Knight to Stourbridge, but we have signed Aaron Griffiths (from Halesowen Town) and Ramone Stephens (from Sutton Coldfield Town) to help bolster the squad.”
