PLANS are taking shape for a major new sporting development in Stourbridge.

Stourton Park, home of Stourbridge Rugby Club, is set to get a new, ultra modern artificial pitch.

The new pitch, which would replace the club’s main pitch at its Bridgnorth Road ground, will provide all-weather facilities for a variety of sports.

The club has made an application for planning permission to South Staffordshire Council and is working with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to finalise the details of the deal.

In a statement, the RFU said: “Stourbridge Rugby Football Club has been identified as a potential Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) host site and the RFU are currently working to ascertain if the pitch is viable.

“There are a number of stages to complete before a decision can be made, including planning approval. Club members and local clubs will be kept informed throughout this process.”

The project, which would be managed by the RFU and require an investment of more than £750,000 would be a major boost to the club’s coffers.

The club is planning an upgrade to facilities at its home ground to accommodate and cater for extra visitors to the club who use the pitch.

Other rugby clubs around the UK have reported a surge in income after the installation of an AGP pitch, Premiership Club Worcester Warriors has a similar surface at its Sixways Stadium.

Stourbridge RFC is staying tight-lipped about the plan but it is understood negotiations are at an advanced stage and it is hoped the pitch will be in place in time for the start of the next rugby season in the autumn.
