GORNAL Athletic’s boss Matt Fisher believes new signings will be the key to success next season.

The Peacocks finished the WMRL Premier Division season rock bottom, with only two wins all season to their name.

The club now face a nervous wait as to have their relegation confirmed, but Fisher is confident that even if his side do go down, they will have the quality to bounce straight back up.

He said: “We have got our pre-season plans together and will have a few weeks off before meeting back in May.

“We’ve already agreed to a number of key signings for next season as we know we need to improve the quality of the squad, because a few of the players we have now are not good enough.

“But we still don’t know whether we are going down or not. There are a lot of conditions that teams have to pass before it is all sorted, including ground gradings.

“So we are still hopeful that we’ll be in the premier division next season and I feel that over the last few months we have shown we have the right to still be playing here.

“But whether we stay up or go down, the new players will be here and if we do go down we know we will have the squad to get us straight back up, and if we stay in the premier division, we will be looking at a mid-table finish.”

Gornal ended the season with a 2-2 draw away at Smethwick on Saturday, and despite finishing the league with only nine points, the manager said recent results have given his team confidence.

Fisher added: “It was a really open game and you wouldn’t have thought it was a last game of the season, nothing to play for, kind of game. Both teams went for it and it was a very entertaining, end-to-end match.

“We went 1-0 up with a cracker from Calvin Campbell but then they scored two to take the lead. However we equalised with 10 minutes to go through Reece Dabbs and managed to see the game out.

“It certainly didn’t feel like an end of season game!

“The truth is the last few months have given us confidence. I know we haven’t got the results and the league table doesn’t lie, but we have improved our performances dramatically.

“It really has given us all confidence going into next season.”
