CONFIDENCE is high in the Old Hill squad after the side picked up their third win on the bounce at home to Sutton Coldfield on Saturday.

Jonathan Wright couldn’t fault his side’s “perfect” performance in the four wicket victory and is banking on his side to carry on their run of form into this weekend’s Birmingham and District League Division Two tie away at Coventry and North Warwickshire.

“It is only our first year in the second division and now we have played everybody once it has given us a chance to get to know the opposition,” Wright said. “The more we play in this league the better we will become.

“Coventry are a good seam bowling side, but we think that are a little brittle in their batting, so we will be targeting certain areas.

“Confidence counts for a lot and ours is high right now after three very different kind of wins.

“We are coping very well in all kinds of situations so we are confident of getting a result.”

Old Hill came out of the blocks firing against Sutton Coldfield, with spin bowler Nigel Davenport cutting through the visitors’ top order, posting figures of 6-41.

Amir Shabir (69 not out) was the only away batsman who managed to break the half century milestone in a dominant first half bowling performance leaving Sutton Coldfield on 239 for 8.

It was a stuttering start with the bat for Old Hill who lost openers Harry Baddams (1) and Matthew Foster (6) early on, but Hamza Ahmed (55) and a great showing from Jared Daniels (123) helped ease their side home.

Wright added: “It was a fantastic win. Having got to a great position with our bowling – I think at one stage they were 130-something for 7 – we knew that if we batted well we could get a result.

“It was a bit of a strange one at the turnaround as it was quite a small total we were chasing and sometimes it is easier to chase a larger total.

“But we performed as a team perfectly which was very pleasing and it was a great win to watch.

“The wicket fell just right for Nigel and he bowled beautifully – it was incredible at times. We just wish we had an extra spinner available, but unfortunately I’m injured.

“We didn’t have the best of starts after the turnaround, but Hamza and Jared batted superbly and we were able to close it out at the end.”

The result pushes Old Hill closer to safety, with the Haden Park Road side now 14 points away from second-from-bottom Penkridge.
