SUPER skipper Adam Roynon produced a stunning final ride to secure maximum points for Cradley in their 49-40 win at Coventry.

The Heathens had already wrapped up victory in the penultimate race, courtesy of a fifth heat win of the afternoon from teenage sensation Drew Kemp.

But with local rivals Birmingham having meetings in hand on Cradley, Will Pottinger’s side knew how invaluable the extra away point could prove to be.

Roynon or Jason Edwards needed to split the home duo of Connor Mountain and former Heathen Jon Armstrong - but there was anxiety early on.

The Bees made the gate and Armstrong hit the front while Roynon had to work his way into second.

With Mountain breathing down his neck though, the pressure was well and truly on.

But the Heathens number one went out into the dirt to blast by Armstrong on the entrance to lap three and also ensured a personal paid maximum in the process.

Roynon said: “Our main objective today was to come here and do what they did to us at Monmore – beat them and get four points. We succeeded and the whole team were brilliant.

“A couple of the boys struggled in the latter part of the meeting but on the whole we were a unit again and nothing fazes us.

“We’re just continuing to build momentum for the next few meetings ahead of hopefully winning that trophy at the end of the season.”

It was another solid afternoon for Cradley who took control of the meeting early on, opening with three heat advantages.

But they were given a reminder that there was plenty still to be done in the sixth race as they handed Coventry a 5-0. Chris Widman had already retired at the back when Alfie Bowtell was deemed to have collided with Danny Phillips on the second lap and was disqualified.

A fired-up Bowtell made amends though by comfortably winning Heat Eight before tucking in behind Kemp for a 5-1 in the ninth as they moved nine in front.

But with Edwards and Kyle Bickley missing out at the start of the next, Coventry edged back to within five.

Step forward in-form duo Roynon and Kemp who claimed the final five race wins between them.

Heathens have two National Trophy meetings left to secure top spot - both against neighbours Birmingham in what promise to be two unmissable derbies.

The first of those is at Monmore Green on Monday, July 2, at 7.30pm.
