OLD Hill expect to beat every team they face, according to skipper Jonathan Wright.

Another outstanding bowling performance by former Warwickshire seamer Naqaash Tahir and a professional batting display by Tom Rock helped their side to a four wicket victory over Rugby at Webb Ellis Road.

Tahir is in great form, following on from his five-wicket haul last weekend with another four on Saturday (4-34), putting Old Hill into a commanding position.

Three wickets for Nigel Davenport (for 37) and a pair for Zahid Kafiat (for 39), kept the away side’s batting target to 153.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing for the visitors who had Rock (64 not out) to thank for getting them over the line.

A pleased Wright said: “It wasn’t a great wicket and was very tough to bat on, but we performed very well throughout the match – apart from one short spell where I thought we were going to mess it up.

“We lost four quick wickets but were able to stabilise it by staying calm.

“Tom was the only player from both teams who was timing the ball well. The rest of us were just trying to play around him.

“But we got out of the sticky patch and that was all down to Tom. He deserves all the credit for getting the largest total by far.”

Wright’s men will look to continue their momentum when they face new league leaders Stratford-Upon-Avon this Saturday (noon start).

“We expect another tough game,” the captain said. “There’s four or five teams at the top of this league – including us – who will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

“I believe that on our day we would beat every single one of them. We’re at the stage when we’re going into every game expecting to win.”

But the first team, who were without Tahir, weren’t as successful when they transitioned to Twenty20 on Sunday, losing by eight wickets at home to Handsworth.

Renrick Hooper was the key man for the visitors hitting an impressive 110 off 42 balls.

Wright added: “Sometimes in Twenty20 it can come down one player and that was the case on Sunday. I’ve never seen anyone hit sixes at the Old Hill ground like Hooper did.

“We could’ve scored 190 and we still would’ve lost that game.”
