Sandwell Lions Cycle Speedway Club were knocked out of the British U19s Team Championships at the semi-final stage despite of a brave effort.

The club travelled to Wednesfield for the event on Sunday afternoon in high spirits.

Racing in the first semi-final, the Lions did well to start with, in fact leading the race at one stage, but in the end they finished joint second with Great Blakenham.

A run-off was needed to see which team would go forward to the final.

Josh Brooks won the toss and took gate number two, leaving Jamie Ball off gate four. Ball gave it all he had only to fall off on the last lap to see off any hopes of winning the title.

The venue also staged the veterans 50 plus final.

Sandwell’s Phil Hemming scored 10 points to show he can still get round the Wednesfield track.

This Sunday, the club travel across to Wednesfield again, this time in a Midland League match (2pm start).
