Halesowen Swimming Club juniors put in an excellent display to win the Redditch Friendly Gala.

Some members of the side were making their first appearance in a team gala but showed no nerves as Hales led from start to finish.

Katy Morrice, Ben Meakin and Mark Laing were all victorious in the freestyle and backstroke, while Kitty Luscombe took first place in the breaststroke and backstroke events.

Imogen Vaughan-Hawkins won in the freestyle and backstroke.

Individual event winners included Jack Simpson, Euan Vaughan-Hawkins, Daniel Smyllie, James Cuthbert and India Hanke.

Halesowen’s relay teams were exceptional, winning nearly all of the events.

Amber Robbins, Nicol Green, Amber Harrison, George Edwards and Owen Crump were unstoppable in the 10 years event, while Indu Appanna, Emma Bird, Kate Martin, Jakob Baker and George Westwood were winners of the 11 years race.

Molly Kelly and Lauren Hill helped Halesowen win all three of the cannon relays to cap a fine evening.

Final scores: Halesowen 268, Redditch 215, Stourbridge 195, Worcester 190, Evesham 112.

Meanwhile, India Hanke was awarded the best newcomer award at the club’s annual presentation evening, held at Benjamins in Halesowen.

More than 50 swimmers were handed prizes following an excellent 12 months for the Halesowen club, which saw them retain the Worcester Winter League and clinch the Mercian Summer League for the first time.

Members achieved three national qualifying times and more than 100 regional times.

Jacob Darby was named swimmer of the year, while Ben Meakin was given the best performance trophy after a year in which he smashed 13 records.

Lauren Hill and Mark Laing were named junior captains for 2012, with Chloe Robbins chosen to lead the senior and Josh Bradley made vice-captain.
