Mixed season for chess club

STOURBRIDGE Chess Club are reflecting on a mixed season which included a relegation and promotion.

The first team failed to live up to expectations and dropped out of Wolverhampton League Division One.

But there was better news for the seconds, who gained promotion to Division Two after winning seven of their 10 matches.

The club also enjoyed success in the Worcester League, finishing second in Division Two, though they declined promotion to Division One so they can continue fielding a development side.

Next month sees the annual post-season friendly against Halesowen on July 4, while the club’s summer tournament began this week.

The five-round tournament uses the Swiss pairing system, meaning everyone has an opportunity to play in each round against an opponent with the same score.
