Lye go four points clear at top
5:00pm Thursday 7th February 2013 in Football
LYE Town will be hoping that this will finally be their year after opening up a four-point lead in West Midlands League Premier Division.
For 83 years, the Stourbridge Road outfit have been playing at the same level never tasting promotion nor relegation.
But now, following Tuesday’s night’s 3-2 win over Wolerhampton Sporting Community, which was hot on the heels of last Saturday’s 2-0 success at title rival Old Wulfrunians coupled with former table-toppers Black Country Rangers’ 5-0 capitulation at Wolverhampton Casuals, who now occupy second place, Lye are in the driving seat. Chairman Brian Blakemore said: “It’s remarkable that Lye Town have played in the same division for their entire 83 year history.
“It’s been an excellent week, but we cannot afford to relax.
“I still believe anyone of five teams could win the league this season as games will come thick and fast.”
Against Old Wulfs, a Kalum Evitts double fired the Stourbridge Road men to the summit before Tuesday’s success over Sporting Community courtesy of a Ricky Anslow strike followed by Damien Whitcombe’s brace.
Lye look to extend their outstanding 100 per cent away record this Saturday when they travel to Willenhall side Sporting Khalsa.
