Lye hit back to stay top

LYE Town stayed top of the West Midlands Premier after scraping past Cradley Town 4-3 on Tuesday.

The Stourbridge Road side trailed 3-2 at the break but recovered to win, maintaining their single-point lead over AFC Wulfrunians and Wolverhampton Casuals.

After tonight’s Smedley Crooke Cup clash with Fairfield Villa, Lye travel to Casuals on Tuesday for a game which could have a major bearing on the title race.

Meanwhile, Dudley Town head to Bustleholme on Saturday with boss Andy Wyton challenging his side to beat the club’s points record.

The Robins sit seventh in the West Midlands Premier with 52 points and while they are some way behind the league leaders, boss Wyton insists the season is far from over.

He said: “Results didn’t go our way against the top sides and we lost the Midweek Floodlit Cup semi-final against Lye.

“I suppose there is the danger the rest of the season becomes an anti-climax but I want to avoid that at all costs.

“There are still 39 points to play for and the club record stands at 80. We could still break it.”

Bottom-of-the-table Bustleholme have lost 27 of their 30 games this season but Wyton has statistical concerns of his own.

He added: “I’ve worked out we’ve thrown away 25 points after scoring the first goal in games this season.

“If anything sums up the difference between us and the top sides it is that.”

Dudley Sports were one of the few teams whose game last Saturday wasn’t postponed, as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Wellington.

Tuesday’s game at Darlaston Town was then abandoned after 28 minutes due to floodlight failure, with Sports leading 1-0.

Joint boss Tony Gore said: “There was just one bulb left on the one pylon and it went.

“That said I think we could have continued, there was just one dark area on the pitch.

“Both sides wanted to continue and there were only three people who didn’t — the referee and his two assistants.

“I think they should have shown a little more common sense.”
