Mitchell spurns the chance of another friendly fixture

STOURBRIDGE director of rugby Neil Mitchell resisted the temptation to play pre-season friendlies against Chinnor and Rotherham this Saturday and instead opted for a game amongst themselves.
Mitchell said: “I’ve seen enough of the playing staff now to know what to expect from them but there are one or two areas of our play that I want to work on”.
It follows a 14-7 defeat to Coventry — a game Mitchell thought his side should have won.
He added: “We gave them two soft tries. I’ve watched the DVD and there were areas where we showed a bit of inexperience which is something I want to eradicate.
“One or two of the decisions we made were quite naive and although the score-line is irrelevent, we should still have won against a side who have developed strong links with Worcester and have ambitions to get into the Championship this season.
“The match with Coventry was played at a level and intensity we’ve not experienced since we were in National One.”
Stourbridge commence their National Two North campaign with a home clash against promoted side Harrogate on September 7.
The following Monday, Stourbridge have a second XV game against Luctonians.
Mitchell said: “One of the problems from last season was the fact we didn’t have a competitive second XV as fixtures were too inconsistent.
“I’ve got a 32 strong squad of players so the seconds will provide some of them with a real opportunity to get a starting place.
“I will also be using some of the Stourbridge Lions players, to help with their development.”
