GORNAL Athletic go gunning for FA Vase glory this Saturday when they entertain Wisbech Town at Garden Walk.

Ironically, the teams met last season, with Gornal coming out on top.

However, only Ravi Sangha remains from the previous Gornal team.

Manager Matthew Price has arranged a friendly with RAF Cosford on Thursday night to run the rule over a number of trialists.

One of them will be Richard Smith from Worcester Raiders who has scored 31 times from 11 games in West Midlands League Division Two.

Price added: “Richard has been scoring goals for fun recently and if he shapes up well against Cosford, he could well be in the side to face Wisbech.”

n Dudley Town came close to becoming the first West Midlands League side to lower leaders Lye Town’s colours this season.

It took an 86th-minute equaliser from Ben Jevons to preserve Lye’s 19 match unbeaten run.

Rion Francis-Mills rifled the Robins in front in the opening minute before Ricky Anslow levelled matters.

Adam Callinswood fired Dudley back in front on 61 minutes and that looked the likely winner until Jevons stole in to convert Anslow’s cross.

Dudley boss Andy Wyton said: “I thought we’d won and we should have won the game.

“There was only one team who wanted to play football and that was Dudley Town.

“Lye just kept lumping the ball into the box — it was horrible to watch.

The Robins have little time to dwell on the game as they travel to Midland Alliance side Causeway United in the FA Vase.

n Tividale have signed former Evesham United and Chasetown midfielder Leigh Downing.

Manager Stuart Scriven said: “It’s a big signing for us. Chasetown wanted to keep him, but Leigh wasn’t happy with their rotation policy.”

Tividale were unable to increase their 100 per cent Midland Alliance record to 13 games this week after their proposed contest with AFC Wulfrunians was called off owing to a waterlogged Packwood Road pitch.

Tividale travel to Quorn on Saturday with Scriven waiting to see whether Aaron Baines and Sam Williams recover from their injuries in time to play.

He has also recalled striker Dan Evans following a loan spell with Dudley Sports.
