Colwell takes over at Causeway

RICHARD Colwell says his focus will be on playing attractive football after taking the reins at Causeway United.

The former Stourport Swifts boss was confirmed as the club’s new manager on Tuesday as part of a reshuffle which sees former boss Carl Burley move up to chairman.

Ross Collins has also joined as assistant boss alongside Andy Mole, with Matt Richards named vice-chairman.

Colwell has been a coach at Causeway for just over 12 months and admitted already knowing the players was a big advantage.

He said: “Now it’s case of getting to know them even better and finding out what makes them tick in order to get the best out of them.

“I like my teams to play with the ball on the ground and I like to see players express themselves.

“We don’t have a playing budget so we know we won’t attract players from the league above.

“It’s about finding players in the league below and improving them.”

One of Colwell’s first moves was to bring full-back Adam Meacham, who left for Redditch United over the summer, back to the club.

Stourbridge youngster Adam Ward has also arrived on loan and had a hand in both goals as Causeway beat Coleshill Town 2-1 last weekend.

Next up is a home clash with Highgate United in the FA Vase second qualifying round on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Burley, who is stepping down after seven years as manager, said the constant travelling from his home in Tamworth had taken its toll.

But he said he was delighted to now be chairman at a club where he has served as player and captain.

He said: “For two years I’ve been travelling back and forth, spending three nights a week at my mothers which obviously isn’t ideal.

“It got to the stage where I didn’t feel I could give the job the time and commitment it needed and it was not fair on the club.

“I made the decision to step down last month but stayed on while everything was sorted out.”

He added: “It was a great honour to be asked to be chairman and something I could not turn down.

“Causeway is my club and I’m really looking forward to the new role.”

Cradley Town will be hoping to advance in the Vase this Saturday when they make the short trip to Lye Town.

The Hammers continued their fine start to the season with a 1-0 win against Shifnal Town on Saturday, before winning 2-1 at Wellington on Tuesday to move third in the table.
