I CAN OUTDO Mick Freer (News, 15 July) when it comes to the grumpiest old man. I think from my own list, below, the matter is settled in my favour! The Dudley rail line that for decades has only had ghost trains on it but no commuter and inter-city trains would be a real boon for the three Black Country boroughs it passes through. All our councillors are quite happy for it to remain empty alongside the commuter congested roads. They want Metro trams on the middle section only but have failed to get the trams in 30 years. A quite absurd state of affairs. Utter idiocy! There is another bright spot in all of this. Cllr Ray Burston has the decency to reply to my e-mails. And, he's not even my councillor! Mick Freer has always been strong on civic pride. Such a pity that our members and officers in the town do not share his sense of civic pride.  − Tim Weller, Halesowen

RECENTLY our son along with two others were assaulted in Halesowen. He was with a large group of youngsters and this was a terrifying event for everyone there. Our son was badly injured and required hospitalisation. We would like to thank the young people who bravely came to his rescue, administered first aid and called for the police and the ambulance. We would also like to thank some men who helped lead him to safety. We have been overwhelmed by the messages of goodwill for our son's recovery – he is well loved locally. Unfortunately he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and even though this attack has broken our hearts it has been reassuring to see a community come together and has restored our faith in humankind.  − Stephen and Sandra Derham, Halesowen
