Maison set for Chester role

CONTROVERSIAL former Halesowen Town chief Morell Maison is poised to become director of football at crisis club Chester City.

Maison left the Grove under a cloud in September after the Yeltz were placed in administration.

He seems likely to return to the game at City, who are currently rock bottom of the Blue Square Premier.

The Blues began the season on minus 25 points after they themselves entered administration, with fans protesting at the reign of former chairman Stephen Vaughan.

Maison, who was present at the club’s defeat to Kidderminster Harriers on Boxing Day, told the Chester Chronicle that he was working on bringing “potential investment” to the club.

The situation will be eerily reminiscent to Yeltz supporters after Maison’s arrival at the Grove in October 2007 in a blaze of publicity as manager and major shareholder.

Though ambitious projects were mooted, including the development of the Grove and building a training ground at the former Cradley High site, he departed with the club on the brink of extinction and almost £500,000 in debt.

During his tenure the Yeltz were twice suspended from all football for failing to pay contracted players, while they were also excluded from this season’s FA Cup and FA Trophy competitions for non payment of gate fees.

Maison himself was banned from football for 12 months for a post-match altercation with striker Dean Brennan at Chippenham Town last season. It was later reduced to three months on appeal.

In October he was arrested on suspicion of fraud as part of an ongoing investigation into Halesowen Town's financial dealings.
