THIS was the scene at the Grove on Saturday as sport in Halesowen suffered another weekend whiteout.

Halesowen Town had been scheduled to take on Oxford City in the Southern League Premier but the match was called off due to the frozen pitch.

The picture was repeated at Wassell Grove as Old Halesonians RFC’s clash with Stoke in Midlands One West also fell victim to the conditions.

With snow continuing to fall regularly and the temperatures remaining low there appears no end to the postponements in sight.

Excepting the Boxing Day clash with Stourbridge, the Yeltz have not played since December 12.

Manager Matt Clarke says he has not witnessed anything like it in his footballing career.

He said: “You usually get a few games called off each season, that’s just the way things are.

“But this has been really weird, every time it looks like the weather will improve the snow comes down again.

“In that respect we are fortunate to have already played a few games more than other teams.

“Some clubs will have quite a backlog later in the season and will be playing a number of games a week.”

Clarke has had a busy week off the pitch as he looks to add to the Yeltz squad.

Improved ties with West Bromwich Albion mean the Championship club’s reserve midfielder Josh Knight is on the verge of a move to the Grove on loan, while the club are also speaking to AFC Telford over the possible return of Danny Edwards.

The wideman impressed during a his recent spell at the club, netting in the derby win and Clarke is keen to bring him back for another stint with a view to a permanent move.

He said: “Danny did very well for us and we are hopeful of bringing him back.

“Josh Knight should also be joining us, the deal is just being finalised.

“He is a regular in their reserve side and I believe his contract is up at the end of the season, so he should be keen to prove himself in a competitive league.”

The Yeltz are scheduled for a trip to Swindon Supermarine this Saturday, before hosting Clevedon Town on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Clarke is hopeful one of the two games will go ahead, as it will allow skipper Jay Denny to serve a suspension before the visit of Farnborough on January 23.

He said: “Jay has had this one game hanging over him for ages because of the fixture chaos.

“We want him to get it out of the way so we have a full squad to choose from for Farnborough.”
