CAUSEWAY United took full advantage of a break in the wet weather this week to crush bottom-of-the-table Gornal Athletic 9-0 in a Midland Alliance match - writes NICK PULLEN

The result has caused Causeway officials to start trawling through the record books, with manager Andy Mole maintaining: “I can’t remember Causeway scoring anywhere near that amount of goals in the Alliance. I think it’s a record score, but I’m waiting to have that confirmed.”

Causeway hit the ground running at Gornal by scoring three times in the opening 15 minutes.

Recent Halesowen Town defender Adam Meacham got the ball rolling with Causeway’s opening goal before Will Tibbetts and Aaron Lloyd quickly added to the total.

Mole insisted: “It wasn’t all one-way traffic as Gornal hit the crossbar and then had a couple of good chances before half-time, but I think those first three goals knocked the stuffing out of them a bit.

“It was important that we didn’t let them back into the game and we promptly scored two more goals at the start of the second half, which practically settled the outcome.”

Tibbetts went on to complete a four-timer, while Meacham converted a hat trick with Reece Shilvock adding his name to the scoresheet as well Mole pulled off a smart move by playing Meacham in a more forward role, and claimed: “He always played in a forward role when on Aston Villa’s books. We picked him up from Cradley Town, who tried to convert him into a full-back, but Adam prefers to play in a more forward position.

“He’s not playing for Halesowen at the moment because he can’t do the travelling to away games owing to his work commitments.

“We played both Adam and Will Tibbetts in a wide positions, with Aaron Lloyd as the lone striker, and it really worked well as we kept hitting Gornal on the break.”

Causeway are scheduled to play Walsall Wood this Saturday at The Grove, if the weather allows.
