Macca’s British title bout off after champ pulls out

DUDLEY-based Darren McDermott's long-awaited shot at the British middleweight title has been thrown into chaos after champion Wayne Elcock withdrew only days before their proposed showdown.

"Macca" was set to go head to head with Elcock at the AstonEvents Centre tomorrow (Friday) but the title holder pulled out due to a chest infection.

On hearing the news, McDermott was seething, but has time as passed he has looked at in a much more positive fashion.

He said: "When I first heard the news I just thought it was a hoax.

"Once I discovered it was really off I was ready to bite someone's head off because for a such a big fight like this you just don't expect it be called off at such late notice.

"But after having the weekend to think things over I'm looking at the whole situation in a positive fashion because I think it proves I've already won the mental battle.

"If it is at all possible this has made me even more determined to win the title when we do meet."

The 29-year-old has not been in action since last October when he defeated Kai Kauramaki and is not worried the longer than expected break from action will have a detrimental effect.

He said: "It's disappointing not to be fighting because physically I'm in top shape but if Elcock thinks this hold up will affect my training he's wrong.

"I'm not a boxer who stops training between fights.

" I'm always in the gym and when a new date is set I will be more than ready.

"He will be in for a big shock because there is no way he will be catching the bodysnatcher out."

Instead of feeling sorry for himself the Priory gas fitter was more upset for his supporters who had bought tickets as well as stablemate Richard Collins who was set to be fighting on the same bill.

He added: "I'm gutted for my fans who had bought tickets but the ones I have spoken to have said don't worry about it but just let them know when the new date is.

"I think some of my mates are even quite happy because they will be on a stag party this weekend so wouldn't have been able to make it but they will now.

"I'm also upset for Richard because he's been training really hard for his fight."
