Hales hockey players find the going hard
1:14pm Thursday 24th October 2013 in Local Sport
OLD Halesonians hockey players had a weekend to forget.
The Firsts lost 4-1 to Hampton in Arden in the league and then crashed out of the Men’s Trophy at the first hurdle to Melton Mowbray following an 11 goal thriller.
Hales lack of composure in front of goal cost them dearly against Hampton.
Chances were created and missed before Hampton went onto build a 3-0 lead.
Graham Knight pulled a goal back before Hampton netted a fourth following a breakaway.
Hales will be more dismayed at the manner in which they lost out 6-5 at Melton.
They built a 3-0 lead at one stage and later led 5-3, but still let the game slip.
Graham Knight put Hales ahead and Charles Palmer added his name to the scoresheet after Paul Woodall netted a hat-trick.
But Hales fell apart in the closing stages as Melton struck twice in the last 60 seconds Hales hope for improved fortunes this week when they take on Kings Heath in a league fixture.
It proved a bad week all round for Hales as the Seconds went down 7-2 to North Staffs, while the ladies lost 3-2 against Harborne.
