JASON Welborn takes on Liam Smith on Saturday determined to grab the opportunity of a second shot at a British Title with both fists.

The Midlands Area Champion challenges the current British Light Middleweight Champion at the Phones 4 U Arena in Manchester.

After Dereck Chisora pulled out of the main event against Tyson Fury, Welborn’s showdown with Smith has been catapulted to chief support to Billy Joe Saunders’ clash with Emanuele Blandamura for the Vacant European Middleweight Championship.

It is a massive opportunity for the Rowley Regis fighter to prove himself on the big stage.

“I feel great,” he said. “I just want to get in there now and soak up the atmosphere.

“It was a bit frustrating waiting for confirmation but I kept myself ticking over and, since the fight was confirmed a fortnight ago, I’ve used the time wisely and am in top shape.

“I’ve tweaked my routine a little and hopefully that will pay off. I need to prove that I belong at this level and that’s what I’m aiming to do against Smith on Saturday."

Welborn took on Frankie Gavin for the Lord Lonsdale belt at welterweight back in January 2013. Losing on that occasion, he believes he is far more equipped to wrestle Smith’s belt from his grasp.
