Worrall hammers his rivals

CRADLEY star Steve Worrall continued his magnificent run of form by storming to a stunning victory in the Golden Hammer event at Monmore Green.

The Heathens ace emerged victorious in front of a packed crowd on Tuesday night to become only the second home winner of the prestigious contest in the modern era.

On a night of breathtaking action, Worrall was made to work extremely hard before eventually fending off Kyle Newman by a single point to climb to the top of the rostrum.

Worrall had worked his way from the back to brilliantly snatch second place from Newman in a scintillating heat two as Ashley Birks edged victory.

It was a result which eventually proved crucial, as both Worrall and Newman reeled off wins in each of their remaining four outings.

It was another memorable evening for Worrall as he continues to enjoy a sensational season - and he was thrilled to come away with an unforgettable win.

He said: "I'm over the moon. Now I'm a Cradley rider and with the form I've been in I was desperate to win it, so I'm so happy I pulled it off.

"I didn't have things all my own way tonight and I wasn't making great starts, so I feel like I really earned it and I'm delighted to have come out on top.

"It was a great night and things are going so well for me at the moment. I'm on the crest of a wave at the moment so hopefully it won't stop any time soon."

Whilst Worrall and Newman set the pace, 2010 champion Simon Lambert completed the top three with a determined 11 point haul.

He edged a thrilling battle with Adam Roynon in heat eight which proved crucial as he narrowly beat the former Heathens skipper to the final rostrum spot.

Defending champion Lewis Blackbird experienced some costly misfortune as he attempted to claim back to back Hammer wins.

He set a new track record with a composed win in his opening ride - yet he was forced wide on the opening bend of heat 10 before bike troubles whilst leading his final ride left him out of the top three.

Coventry Storm duo Oliver Greenwood and Dan Greenwood both proved impressive as they bagged nine points apiece, whilst Heathens pair Tom Perry and Max Clegg battled hard for solid points hauls.

Both Nathan Greaves and Matt Williamson recovered from difficult starts to be involved in some hard-fought racing.

Overall it was a night of magnificent action which saw Cradley star Worrall spark jubilant scenes amongst his home fans with a brilliant win.
