GORNAL Athletic have boosted their firepower with the signing of former Wolves prospect Liam Hughes.

Forward Hughes, who is originally from Gornal, arrives at his hometown club after ending last season with Wolverhampton Casuals following a move from Black Country Rangers.

Manager Andy Wyton hopes his goals will help fire the Garden Walk outfit to title glory next season.

He said: "We missed too many chances last season and that cost us at times. Often we were on top during games but couldn't punish teams.

"Liam is a great signing at this level and his goals could make a massive difference to us.

"It is great that he has come home and is keen to play for us. I think we will have a great chance of being right in the mix if we can make the most of his arrival."

Wyton is working hard to freshen up his Gornal Athletic squad ahead of the new campaign.

The Peacocks finished third in the West Midlands Premier last season and now Wyton is gunning for title success next year.

Former Causeway United man Alex Cowley has also arrived as player/coach at Garden Walk.

The squad has also been strengthened by the signings of central midfielder Danny Cresswell and winger Tom Gadd.

Wyton will soon make a decision on which of last season's players he wants to keep.

He said: "I think the league is there for the taking next season.

"It is quite open with three or four teams having a good chance of winning it. I think we are in that group and that will be our aim.

"The squad needed freshening up a little after last season and that is what we are working on now.

"I have spoken to targets and will be looking to add to those that have already joined us.

"Our general attitude wasn't quite right and we want to change that for next season."
