STOURBRIDGE Rugby Club’s members are preparing to decide who they want guiding the club’s future.

They will gather for an AGM next Wednesday where they will vote for the candidates they want in the top positions at Stourton Park.

The unprecedented election comes after a group, which is being led by former player Robin Edwards, decided to stand against the current committee.

As part of the move to effect change, current chairman Carl Wythes will go head-to-head with Edwards for election to the top role.

The group looking to take control, understood to be calling themselves the Improvement Group, has also named a host of other candidates that will be vying for votes on July 29.

It could potentially see an overhaul of all the top positions at the club.

The push for power comes following a frustrating spell for fans that has seen the rugby club narrowly miss out on promotion twice in the last three years. Last season was a particular low point as the team ended the campaign in mid-table in National Two North.

In preparation for the vote, the current committee issued their manifesto on Monday and held a meeting at Stourton Park on Tuesday night to discuss the situation further.

The eight-page document outlined the committee’s plan for the next three years as well as highlighting their past achievements.

The current administration is basing its campaign on the fact they have restored financial stability to the club after dealing with debts they inherited when they took over.

Key plans for the future include developing corporate sponsorship, a revamp of the clubhouse so it becomes a venue in own right and pursuing increased membership and matchday crowds.

Opposition leader Edwards has previously spoken of his desire to be involved with the club so he can set up a more cohesive link between the first team and the club’s other sides.

He has listed the need to set up a colts side, give more focus to the minis and juniors and create a link between the Lions and first team.

He also wants to boost the club’s sponsorship revenue.

Director of Rugby Neil Mitchell has said the election has not affected his pre-season plans as he looks to revamp the first team squad.
