OLDBURY Muay Thai star Damien Trainor has made a winning return to competitive action.

The 36-year-old fighter, regarded by many as a UK Thai Boxing legend, came back with a bang at the O2 Arena in London on March 26 after being invited to take part on the bill.

Trainor, who runs his K-Star Legacy gym on Hagley Road West in Quinton, started out in the sport in 1994 at the age of 14.

During that time he competed in 84 professional fights, became a two-time British champion, four-time European champion and two-time world champion.

He also lived and competed for a long time in Thailand during his career.

However, his last fight prior to last month’s reappearance was in 2012 when he made the decision to stop competing for a while due to opening his own gym in Quinton.

He explained: “The gym has been open three years now and it caters for men, women and children.

“I’ve got a few lads now who have fought on some of the biggest shows in the nation.

“I also now have a son who will be two in June. This is another reason that I had been unable to train properly as now I was giving my undivided attention to my gym and my son.”

But, after receiving an offer from one of the main promotions in the United Kingdom in October last year, Trainor decided it was time to step back into the ring.

“After a great deal of thought I’d decided to lace up the gloves and see if I still had it,” he said. “To be honest, my main reason for fighting again was so that my son could see me in the ring.”

The event saw him secure a points victory over Spanish fighter Adrian Lopez.

“It was great to get the win and the main thing was my lad got to see me fight. It was great that he could watch me in action,” he added.

Trainor will now take his time before deciding if to continue his comeback.

“I have had a few offers to fight again but I’m going to take my time before I decide what to do. I don’t want to rule anything out just yet. I’ll wait and see what offers come my way and weigh it all up.”
