COOMBS Wood began their Worcestershire Country League Division Two campaign in disappointing fashion last weekend.

They lost to neighbours Lye by 153 runs after Lye took advantage of some ordinary bowling to post a total of 321-7 off their 50 overs.

The Wood’s batting was equally ordinary and besides a carefully-constructed innings by Matt Colwell, they slumped to 168 within 40 overs.

They will look to bounce back quickly when they travel to face Enville this Saturday (1pm start).

Meanwhile, the club’s seconds were also in disappointing form when they faced Hagley.

Kevin Baker smashed 67 in a valuable ninth wicket partnership with Gulham Abbas to give them a modest but unexpected total of 218.

Far too many batsmen got themselves out, though Hagley were tight and disciplined in the first 40 overs.

Hagley replied well and eventually eased home with 13 overs to spare, with the loss of just four wickets.

Next week the seconds will host Colwall at Stewarts Road (1pm).

The third XI begin their campaign with a home fixture against Netherton in Cutnall Green on Saturday.
