WARLEY Boxing Club super heavyweight Solomon Dacres is targeting Olympics selection after joining Team GB.

The 23-year-old, who used to play professional rugby for Moseley, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Anthony Joshua and Joe Joyce after linking up with GB Boxing's coaching set-up.

He is now on a three-month trial period before having his progress guided by some of the nation's best coaches.

Dacres said: "It's a really big opportunity for me and I'll be training with the GB set-up every couple of weeks.

"The ultimate aim will be the Olympics.

"I'll still be at Warley when I'm not training and sparring with the GB squad and hopefully continue to progress."

The talented boxer only took up the sport three years ago but has quickly caught the eye under the guidance of John Nash and his coaches at Warley.

Dacres, who has already turned down approaches to turn professional, recently met Joshua and Joyce at a recent training camp as he prepares to fight for ABA honours this year.

The top seed will compete in the quarter-finals of the ABA Elite Championships in London on April 21.

Nash said: "We are really proud of him. He has only been boxing for three years so that shows you the commitment and determination he has already shown.

"He knows how important it is for him to keep learning and the opportunity to become part of the GB squad will offer him that.

"We're pleased we have been able to help and it also shows us that we are doing something right at the gym as well."

Though Dacres won't be in action at the club's next fight night this Friday, he will be on hand as a corner man to help some of the other fighters from the gym.

Warley Boxing Club's next event will again be at the Travellers Inn, Wolverhampton Road, with Corey Clarke topping the bill.

Tickets cost £10 with doors opening at 7.30pm.
