FORMER West Brom striker Lee Hughes rolled back the years to help Halesowen Town to a vital derby day win over Stourbridge.

The 41-year-old forward put in a big performance as the Yeltz won 1-0 against ten-man Stour at the Grove to ease their relegation worries.

Town moved nine points ahead of basement boys Sutton Coldfield thanks to Ahmed Ali's first half goal. He rolled the ball home on the rebound after Hughes' effort was pushed out by keeper Matt Gould.

Hughes was delighted with the victory, saying: "It was tough, local derbies always are.

"It was a scrappy game but the lads put everything on the line.

"Even when they went down to 10 men it was still going to be tough because they were going to fight until the end.

"The lads worked hard and it's a great victory, especially with Sutton losing.

On his time at the club, he added: "I'm enjoying it. Clarkey (assistant Matt Clarke) and John (Hill) brought me in and just told me to use my experience and help the lads out and hopefully I've done that.

"At my age you do wonder if the crowd want you here because of my age and different things, but as you can see I've put the work in and we've got the rewards.

"It's massive, we were all together and you could see that at the end. It's not finished until we get the points and are mathematically there, but hopefully that'll come now."
