Heathens swoop for Haines

DUDLEY Heathens have swooped to sign British Under 21 champion Joe Haines ahead of the National League play-offs.

Haines, who recently turned 21, has joined the former Cradley club as a temporary replacement for injured skipper Adam Roynon.

He currently rides for Premier League Sheffield on loan from Wolverhampton and has enjoyed a fine season with the South Yorkshire side. He won his second Under 21 title at Dudley’s Monmore Green track back in April.

Haines said: “I’m delighted to have this opportunity but people will think I’m a glory hunter coming in for the play-offs!

“They’ve explained to me that I’m in as cover for Adam and I know that will be tough because he’s had a fantastic season. I really hope he recovers quickly but if not I’ll be there for the Heathens.

“And I know how serious they are, part of the deal states I can’t wear my Wolves racesuit because it would upset the fans. There must have been a massive rivalry there back in the day!

“I’ve had a long chat with Nigel Pearson (Heathens Chairman) about the club history and tradition and I am proud to have this opportunity.”

Haines has a National League average of 10.76 and will ride for the club in their play-off semi-final at Monmore on Tuesday, September 25.

The deadline for play-off qualification is now Wednesday, September 19 and as league leaders Heathens will have choice of opposition. They will announce who they have picked on the night of the deadline.
