Old Hill looking for great escape

DAN Cox says Old Hill will not under-estimate Whitchurch as they bid to complete a dramatic relegation escape.

The Haden Hill side head to Shropshire needing a win and either Kenilworth Wardens or Coventry and North Warwickshire to slip up to preserve their Birmingham League Division One status.

On paper they could not have an easier game, with winless Whitchurch already relegated.

But Cox says this makes them dangerous opponents.

He said: “They will be able to go out there and express themselves, whereas we have it all to lose.

“From our point of view it’s simple, we have to go out there and win and then hope results go our way.

Old Hill’s glimmer of hope was achieved thanks to a resounding 131-run win over Wardens last weekend, a result which moved them within 11 points of the Warwickshire side, who host Smethwick. Meanwhile Coventry, who are just nine points ahead, visit promotion-chasing Walmley.

Cox added: “You really can’t bet on anything at this stage. Days like Saturday are the reason you play cricket.

“It’s exciting because a month ago I think a lot of people had written us off.”

The mood at Halesowen is a little more relaxed, though Wes Griffiths’ side still have work to do to ensure their Division Two status.

Saturday’s winning draw against Old Elizabethans moved them up to seventh but they still require five points from their trip to Eastnor to be sure of safety.
