OLD Halesonians rang the changes for their North Midlands Cup quarter final clash at Shropshire side Newport by promoting several of their promising second XV players.
The youngsters gave a good account of themselves and early signs suggested Hales would progress before falling to a 14-7 defeat.
Old Hales saw Andy Holloway cross after 20 minutes which was converted by full-back Andy Robinson.
Newport responded with a converted score before half-time leaving Hales to rue the fact they didn’t make more use of the slope during the break.
Hales second row Tom King was given a yellow card in the second half for collapsing a maul and Newport’s pack took full advantage to secure a second converted try to lead 14-7.
Hales regrouped during the closing stages and almost snatched a second try when full back Robinson released replacement winger Rhys Denham, who was tackled feet from the try-line.
Hales return to National Three Midlands at Wassell Grove this Saturday when they entertain title rivals Broadstreet.
The thirds lost to a Stourbridge side 38-15 while the fourths beat Wednesbury 27-7.
