OLD Halesonians RFC exited the North Midlands Cup at the hands of Malvern, though the 45-13 scoreline does not tell the full story.

Hales fielded a changed side against their National League hosts, with young lads Wakefield and Sadler acquitting themselves well among old boys Tom and Chris Harris and welcome return from injuries from Grant and McGuire among others.

It was a bright start for the visitors in the opening exchanges, as they put the home side under sustained periods of pressure which resulted in a penalty and the lead.

But Malvern’s first foray into opposition territory brought a try as scrum half Tom Longley made a break from his own half, with the ball eventually finding Ollie Marshall who went over for the try. The conversion by Simon Dawes made it 7-3 to Malvern.

Malvern doubled their tally from a scrum on Halesonians’ five metre line, which wing James Bennett collected before touching down.

Longley added a third try before the break and Malvern lead 21-3 at half-time.

The second half began in fiery fashion but a lapse in concentration from Hales let in a fourth try.

Though good work by the pack then allowed Seb Richard to set up Chris Hooper for Hales opening try, the fact they had to chase the game made them vulnerable to the counter and Malvern effectively sealed the match with three quick tries.

With the final move of the game Hooper released Richards who went over to make the score a little more respectable.

Hales return to Midlands One West action when they visit Camp Hill on Saturday.
