Mitch says players are proud of perfect record

NEIL Mitchell says complacency will not be a factor as Stourbridge RFC look to close in on the National Two North title.

The league-leading Saxons return to action on Saturday when they host second-from-bottom Huddersfield, looking to secure their 17th win of the campaign.

On paper, January looks a favourable month with Mitchell’s men facing sides in the wrong half of the table.

But the director of rugby is taking nothing for granted and says his players are determined to preserve their perfect record of winning every game with a bonus point.

He said: “We have Huddersfield and Stockport who are both in the bottom three, along with Luctonians and Bromsgrove who are struggling.

“If you look at it on paper, you would say it’s a relatively good month.

“We know we can’t take our eye off the ball for any game.

“We want to win and get the bonus point, we have to strive for that every game.

“I tell the players we have got the best record in the history of the National leagues and if protecting that is not motivation I don’t know what is.”

Mitchell is expecting a different challenge from the one the Saxons faced in their 33-7 win in Huddersfield last September.

An influx of new players in the back row has seen the Yorkshire outfit improve markedly in the recent weeks.

He said: “I’ve had a good look at them. They have five different players in the backs and in crucial positions.

“But I think we are a far better side now too.”
