WORCESTERSHIRE all-rounder Gareth Andrew insists it’s important to wrap up Yorkshire’s first innings quickly when plays resumes tomorrow in the LV= County Championship Division One clash at New Road (11am).

Andrew enjoyed a successful stint with bat and ball for Worcestershire on the second day, scoring 59 to shepherd the County to three batting points and a total of 311 from 93.3 overs.

The 31-year-old and Jack Shantry then picked up four wickets apiece as champions Yorkshire reached 298-9 by the close.

Tim Bresnan finished unbeaten on 78, with Andrew returning 4-81 from 20 overs and Shantry 4-60 from 21 overs.

Ryan Sidebottom, who remains unbeaten on 10, left the ground on crutches after injuring a calf muscle while batting.

National selector James Whittaker, spin bowling coach Peter Such and ECB technical director of elite cricketing coaching, Andy Flower, all watched the action at New Road.

Andrew said: “We bowled well in parts. We were a little bit off in other parts so it was one of those days that, at the end of it, we were pretty happy.

"We had a few stages where we didn’t have any luck and that could have made a big difference.

“We need to set the tone with the ball early on and take that last wicket before building a platform with the bat from where we can start scoring.

“For us to compete against such a good side as Yorkshire, we are very happy but we want to keep pushing this game forward."

Worcestershire resumed on 264-8 from 82 overs and Andrew, in his first Championship appearance for 11 months after injury, reached his half-century off 59 balls.

Sachithra Senanayake provided solid support until the partnership was broken at 298-9 when Andrew was caught at slip.

The innings ended when Senanayake (13) was caught by Will Rhodes to give Jack Brooks a fifth wicket. He finished with 5-56 from 21.3 overs.

Morris gave Worcestershire a perfect start when Rhodes (0) was snared by skipper Daryl Mitchell at second slip.

It became 3-2 when Cheteshwar Pujara (0) edged Andrew and fell to a superb catch by Tom Fell.

Alex Lees and Richard Pyrah, who was dropped on 13, then produced a 100-run stand before Shantry took two quick wickets.

First Pyrah (43) was caught by Mitchell and then Jack Leaning was adjudged lbw for 10 to leave Yorkshire on 127-4.

Andrew ended Lees innings on 87 and picked up his third wicket when removing Andrew Hodd.

Shantry bowled Steve Patterson (0) at 193-7 but Sidebottom supported Bresnan until he was forced to retire.

Andrew removed Brooks for 26 but Sidebottom returned and he and Bresnan saw it out until close of play.

Andrew added: “I am just taking each day as it comes. After being out for a long period of time, you just love each day you’re still on the park.

“I just enjoy taking the new ball and it’s a job I’ve done for the last couple of years and it suits me bowling quite straight and at the stumps.

“Yorkshire are a good side even with the players missing in the Caribbean.

"It’s still a strong unit and a strong bowling attack.

"You are not going to get too many stronger attacks than that in the country. For us to hold our heads up and compete in this way has been positive.”

He continued: “The wicket is pretty slow and low and we tend to enjoy bowling on it.

"We have our set plans of how to bowl at Worcester. We have two spinners so, hopefully, they will play a big part in the Yorkshire second innings.

“It’s going to be crucial first thing that we try to take a wicket before Yorkshire get to 300 but, more importantly, make sure they don’t get away from us.”
