SPINNER Ben Twohig returned his best Second XI Championship figures for Worcestershire on the opening day of their encounter with Lancashire at Southport during which 16 wickets fell.

The slow left-armer collected his first five wicket haul in the competition on his way to a final analysis of 6-73 from 18.4 overs after Lancashire had elected to bat.

Academy player Twohig had taken 5-33 at the start of the campaign against Somerset at New Road but that was in a three-day friendly encounter.

Lancashire were indebted to an unbeaten century from Liam Livingstone whose innings of 118 came from 141 balls with seven sixes and seven fours.

Twohig helped bring about a Lancashire collapse from 155-3 to 259 all out, while fellow spinners Shaaiq Choudhry (2-64) and George Rhodes (1-17) were also amongst the wickets.

But Worcestershire also struggled for runs after an initial opening stand of 37 between Rhodes and Alex Hepburn.

With Alex Gidman run out for four, they ended the day on 110-6.
