A THREE-wicket post-tea burst by 18-year-old Aneesh Kapil and four scalps for Richard Jones helped Worcestershire to dismiss Nottinghamshire for 243 on day one of their LV= County Championship Division One clash.

The visitors had made it to 193-4 and looked in control of the first match at New Road this season, before England under 19s all-rounder Kapil intervened with a spell of three wickets for just two runs in four overs, while Jones (4-76) mopped up the tail.

Despite this, Alan Richardson was once again the pick of the home attack with fine figures of 2-23 off 22 overs, featuring 11 maidens.

Worcestershire openers Daryl Mitchell and Mike Klinger then survived a tricky five-over spell to reach the close on 5-0.

Despite the heavy overnight rain, the New Road groundstaff worked hard to get the game under way on time. Mitchell won the toss and inserted Notts under cloudy skies, yet the opening pair negotiated the morning session relatively trouble-free.

However, Richardson struck in the second over after lunch when James Cameron dived to his right to take a smart catch at square-leg to remove Nick Edwards for 23 to make it 70-1.

Twelve runs later, Jones accounted for Alex Hales, who had been in good touch for his 49, before edging to Mitchell at second slip and Michael Lumb (17) soon chopped-on to Cameron’s medium-pacers.

Richardson reduced the visitors to 137-4 when he removed England all-rounder Samit Patel, caught at backward point by Klinger for 26 As the skies cleared, batting began to look easy as Notts captain Chris Read and former Worcestershire academy prospect James Taylor found the boundary at will in a partnership of 56 in 16 overs.

Kapil then swung the momentum in his side’s favour with a quickfire trio of wickets and Jones ensured Notts managed just a single batting point.
