Time for us to move on after CB40 KO — Rhodes

STEVE Rhodes is eager for his Worcestershire players to quickly put the Clydesdale Bank40 home defeat to Essex behind them.

The lacklustre County slipped to a disappointing 25-run loss at New Road as the Eagles proved too strong in all departments.

However, director of cricket Rhodes has already switched his focus back to four-day mode ahead of Wednesday’s LV= County Championship Division One trip to Hove to face Sussex (11am).

He said: “We didn’t quite nail our yorkers at the end against Essex and if you do that you will go the journey, while there were a few slack overs in the early stages too.

“Essex played well on a wicket that was good for one-day cricket, which is creditable to Tim (Packwood, head groundsman) and his team. “I thought (Ryan) ten Doeschate’s innings was just what they wanted and (Mark) Pettini batted most of the way through. “They got to a total which was difficult for us to chase.

“We gave it a good effort, but obviously it wasn’t quite enough. It is a learning curve for a lot of our young players and hopefully they can benefit from it.

“Ten Doeschate’s innings gave them a cushion to their innings. One of the other reasons why we let them get away from us a little bit was that we could have fielded better. We have generally fielded pretty well this year, so it was disappointing to see us not nailing our plans in the field.

“That’s cricket though, it happens and we have to move on — we have an important game coming up against Sussex this week and need to be firing for all of those four days.”
