TRIBUTES have been paid to the 'Queen of Cradley Heath' who was a popular character in the town - especially at its Tesco store.

Jean Whittle, who was affectionately known as 'Our Jean' died age 92 on Friday January 19 after suffering a stroke.

Jean was a well-known and regular visitor at Tesco Extra on Foxoak Street where she became friends with many of the staff.

She would buy her favourite employees treats, cakes and knitted gifts and would pick up shopping for neighbours despite her advancing years.

She would stage collections for the Salvation Army in Cradley Heath, where she was a valued member and would even pick up copies of the Halesowen News from the store and deliver them to her neighbours on Upper High Street.

Liz Newton, of Sign Wizards, which is near Jean's home, said: "Jean was an inspirational woman.

"She was always glad to help out anyone who needed a hand.

"She always had time for a chat, and was truly the Queen of Cradley Heath.

"She was well known in this area, and was always seen going up and down the high street, sometimes more than once a day.

"I am really going to miss this wonderful golden-hearted lady."

Liz said Jean loved the Royals and was very excited to be involved in the Jubilee celebrations.

Jean, who did not have any children or close family, made strong bonds with some staff at Tesco.

One of the managers paid for her shopping a few months before Christmas and the store donated an electric heater to her when she moved into her flat.

A few years back some staff took Jean for a carvery and gave her a ride in a convertible car with the roof down in a trip filled with "lots of laughter."

One of the staff said: "Tesco Cradley Heath won't be the same without Queen Jean.

"So many staff built up such a strong bond.

"She will be forever loved and always missed."

Jean's funeral will be at The Salvation Army, Meredith Street, Cradley Heath on Thursday February 1 at 11.15am, then at Rowley Regis Crematorium at 12.15pm.

Anyone is welcome.
