BIRMINGHAM Repertory Theatre's classic Christmas production of The Snowman is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Based on Raymond Briggs' timeless illustrated picture book - the show, which returns to the stage in January, brings to life the story of a young boy's adventure with his snowman who miraculously comes to life on Christmas Eve.

Featuring an array of colourful characters including dancing penguins, a snow princess, wicked Jack Frost and Father Christmas himself, the show combines dancing and live music and is a festive treat for all the family.

Stuart Rogers, executive director at Birmingham Repertory Theatre, said: “We are delighted to welcome The Snowman back home to The REP to celebrate its 25th birthday, and look forward to sharing the show’s magic with existing fans and a whole new generation of children as well.”

Inspired by the film directed by Dianne Jackson and produced by John Coates, the Rep's stage production features choreography by Robert North, direction by Bill Alexander, design by Ruari Murchison, lighting by Tim Mitchell and music and lyrics by Howard Blake - including the classic Walking in the Air.

First created in 1993, the show has proved a huge success with tours in the UK, Far East and Scandinavia and a West End run of 21 years at London’s Peacock Theatre - where it is currently playing until January 6, 2019.

The Snowman runs at The Rep, Centenary Square, Broad Street, Birmingham, from Wednesday January 16 to Saturday January 26, 2019.
