A 56-year-old farmer was assaulted in his Hunnington farmhouse by his estranged wife and her new boyfriend, a court heard.

Phillip Bibbey was punched on the nose by Donna Bibbey while watching TV in the lounge of Oatenfields Farm before being attacked by Daniel Cook.

Worcester Crown Court was told his former wife had moved out, but still worked on the dairy farm and the pair had argued earlier in the day.

Alex Warren, prosecuting, said she ignored a driving ban and drove back to the farm with Cook at 9.30pm on May 14 to return a dog she had taken for a walk.

The 43-year-old went into the living room where Mr Bibbey, who had had a double hip replacement in February, was sitting with his feet on the sofa and punched him on the nose.

She ran from the room and Mr Bibbey shut the door and stood against it but 33-year-old Cook kicked it off its hinges.

He knocked Mr Bibbey to the floor with a single punch and kicked him on the back and legs as he tried to protect himself.

Mr Bibbey then followed Cook into the kitchen as he left and Cook pushed him causing him to fall face first into the shelves of a Welsh dresser.

A cup hook stuck into his face narrowly missing his left eye and he needed stitches to the wound. He also suffered a broken nose, a black eye and bruising, the court heard.

Cook, of Aire Croft, Birmingham, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage to property and was jailed for 12 months.

Bibbey, of Redhill Place, Hunnington, who admitted assault and driving while disqualified, will be sentence on January 9.

Cook said he had only acted because he had heard his girlfriend scream while he was waiting outside and thought she had been assaulted by Mr Bibbey.

He denied kicking Mr Bibbey but after hearing the evidence, Judge Robert Juckes, QC, said he was satisfied the farmer had been kicked while he was on the floor.
