GRENFINGERED youngsters at a Halesowen primary school clinched first place in the inaugural vegetable trug class at the Malvern Autumn Show.
Caslon Primary School beat competition from around the region to take the honours at the show in a section for vegitables presented in a trug basket.
Abbey Road Allotments chairman Mick Poultney, who runs Caslon’s after school gardening club, had persuaded organisers to introduce the class to boost the children’s section.
But despite his influence in teaching the children about growing, he said the entry was all their own work.
He said: “I did no lifting, washing, preparing, exhibiting, arranging of anything. All I did was teach them how to grow the produce alongside Anna Wright.”
Other schools that entered were from Birmingham, Leominster, Gloucester and Telford and Mr Poultney said it had been successful for its first year.
