THE centenary anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme will be marked in Blackheath next Friday (July 1).
The town’s Royal British Legion branch has been invited to perform a ceremonial whistle blowing at the Powke Lane cenotaph in memory of the soldiers who took part in the First World War battle.
Branch secretary Mark Spilsbury said they had been asked to blow a whistle three times by the Western Front Association as that was the signal officers gave for the men to climb out of their trenches and charge towards the German lines.
Branch members will perform the act of remembrance at 7.30am.
