IT REALLY is extraordinary how quickly things move in politics. A couple of months ago, the plan was for David Cameron to stand down before 2020, with an expected competition for the next Conservative leader to be between George Osborne and Boris Johnson. Three weeks ago that all changed with Cameron’s resignation, and ten days ago, we were expecting to be in for a long hot summer of leadership campaigning, for the next prime minster to be announced in September. Now we have a new PM, a new cabinet and a fully appointed list of ministers.

This is incredibly good news because it brings to an end the period of uncertainty after the referendum result. We now have some reshaped government departments, two of which are new and crucial to delivering Brexit. The Department for Exiting the European Union is led by Eurosceptic David Davis and includes Worcester City MP Robin Walker. Their job is to get us out of the UK in the best way possible, securing protections for UK nationals and interests in the EU. The Depart- View from Westminster ment for International Trade is led by another Eurosceptic, Liam Fox, and is charged with securing trade deals with the EU and the rest of the world, and building on our existing international trade. This is one of the most important economic departments and is delivering what 64 per cent of Wyre Forest’s residents asked for. It is a great pleasure for me to be one of the four minsters in that department. It is no secret that I campaigned for “Remain” in the referendum, but I am optimistic about our future. All the cards have been tossed in the air and the swift resolution of the government uncertainty means that we are in a terrific position to be able to manage them to our advantage when they fall. The frenetic activity and the focus means we are getting on with the job. The drop in the Pound means that we are already seeing a pick up in exports and inward investment. We need to make sure that people who trade with us will continue to do so after a recovery in the pound.

The whole government, Eurosceptic or Europhile, are now united in delivering what the country asked for, in the best possible way.
